AMETHYST: A variety of quartz which is typically purple/violet in colour. Amethyst can be found in alluvial deposits or in geodes. Southern Brazil and Uruguay are typically where the most spectacular Amethyst geodes are found, the largest of which is named “The Empress of Uruguay” which stands 3.27 meters tall and weighs 2.5 tonne!
Amethyst jewellery was very fasionable in the late 19th century. It is a popular gemstone used in Scottish jewellery such as plaid brooches and also used to adorn dirks, skean dhus and kilt pins.
Russian amethysts from the Urals have a reddish tinge and Canadian stones are violet in colour. Other locations this stone can be found include Australia, India, USA, Germany, Namibia and Zambia.
